Tips on Grooming Your Russian Toy

The smooth, shorthaired coat should be gently brushed occasionally or simply wiped over with a damp cloth. The long coat should be brushed daily with a soft bristle brush. Bathe both types about once per month, taking care not to get water in the ears. Check the ears regularly and keep the nails trimmed. This breed is an average shedder.

Why Brush or Groom Your Russian Toy Dog?

Brushing and combing your dog's hair coat is an important part of standard pet care. Combing assists to keep your Russian Toy dog's coat in good condition by removing loose hair and preventing hair mats/knots.

Brushing also serves to help to spread healthy natural skin oils over the hair shaft, promoting a gleaming coat and helping dirt to slide off the hair. This can also help to decrease the need to bath and therefore lower the occurrence of bathing.

Brushing and grooming of your Russian Toy dog are tasks that help to reinforce the good connection bond between your pet and you. Brushing should be a pleasurable and relaxed experience for your pet and you.

How Often to Groom Your Russian Toy

How frequent to brush and groom your dog will depend upon each individual dog. Dogs tend to contrast in their need for brushing because of their coat type and length and also depending on their recent activities.

Dogs with short coats commonly require much less brushing and grooming contrasted to dogs with medium to long haired coats as these longer coats can get tangles, mats and debris trapped in them more easily.

Some very short-haired canines may not need traditional 'brushing' and for these dogs, owners may instead like to try a soft grooming glove to delicately remove loose hair, occasionally.

Canines should be brushed 'as required'. Owners should monitor the condition of their dog's coat, looking for any tangles/mats or dullness which indicates they might need a brush. Grooming can take anything from a couple of minutes to a number of hours a week depending on your type of dog.

Russian Toy Information

The Russian Toy (also known as the Russian Toy Terrier, and in Russia as the Russkiy Toy, Toychik,Russian: Русский той, Тойчик) is a very small breed of dog originally bred in Russia from the English Toy Terrier which is known today as the Manchester Terrier. There are two types of coats in the breed: smooth coat and long coat. The smooth-coated variety was previously known as the Russian Toy Terrier and long-coated as the Moscow Long Haired Toy Terrier. Both were brought together under the same Russian Toy Terrier name in 1988 and the "Terrier" was dropped from the name when the breed was added in 2006 to the official list of breeds registered with the Fédération Cynologique Internationale[1] and has been registered in the Foundation Stock Service of the American Kennel Club since 2008, allowed to compete in AKC companion events since 2010. The first official breed standard of the two varieties was written in 1966 in Russia.

Active and cheerful, the Russian Toy was originally bred both as an anti-rat dog and a watch dog. The second quality is still active in the breed, and they can be very vocal. They can become quite attached to their family, regardless of the ages of the family members. Russian Toys are usually very reserved with strangers, but very loyal to their owners, always ready to protect them from any perceived danger.
