Cockapoo Personality

Wishing to bring a pet dog into your home? Some canine breeds are easier to own than others, especially for beginner dog parents.

To find the easiest canine breeds to own, we took a look at an assortment of important characteristics. And you might be amazed by the traits that matter most. You might think you want a clever dog. Highly intelligent dogs aren't always the simplest to train, because trainability is more about a dog's desire to comply with instructions than his capability to understand them.

You might think an energetic dog will be the easiest to keep healthy. A dog with a lower energy level and no genetic predisposition to disease will really be easier to handle. Plus, choosing a dog with an easygoing temperament - and minimal grooming needs - will go a long way toward keeping you sane.

    1. Beagle - The beagle is among the top 10 most popular breeds for good reason: He has a bigger-than-life personality and a merry nature that make him a warm and joyful companion.

    2. Border Terrier - The border terrier is very "joyful," "plucky," and "affectionate." This dog has a medium energy level but a more laid-back character than many other terriers.

    3. Bulldog - If you want a patient and mellow pet dog, you can't make a mistake with the bulldog. You can effectively train your bulldog - especially if you use lots of praise and incentives and keep a sense of humor.

    4. Cavalier King Charles Spaniel - They can be faithful hiking partners or shameless couch potatoes, relying on the owner's personality - as long as they get a rewarding walk each day.

    5. Basset Hound - These medium-sized dogs aren't very energetic. And while most dog owners won't put the basset hound's hunting prowess to the test, they'll value the breed's sheer patience with children.

Cockapoo Information

The Cockapoo is not a purebred dog. It is a cross between the Cocker Spaniel and the Poodle. The best way to determine the temperament of a mixed breed is to look up all breeds in the cross and know you can get any combination of any of the characteristics found in either breed. Not all of these designer hybrid dogs being bred are 50% purebred to 50% purebred. It is very common for breeders to breed multi-generation crosses. Note: some Cockapoo clubs are working toward making the Cockapoo a purebred dog by multi-generation crossing, while other breeders are sticking to the basic Poodle / Cocker mix, stating they wish to preserve the heterosis effect in the hybrid mix. Ask the breeder you contact which type of Cockapoo they are breeding.

Cockapoos have become popular because they generally combine the outgoing, loving personality of the Cocker Spaniel with the low-shedding, low-dander qualities of the Poodle. Cockapoos are active, and thrive when they receive regular exercise. Cockapoos can be very agile, excelling at "retrieve" games and enjoying activities such as swimming. Cockapoos are frequently very needy dogs and as such are not suitable to be left alone for long periods as they frequently suffer from separation distress or anxiety. The Cockapoo is a cross-breed, not a purebred, and does not "breed true." In breeders' terms, "breeding true" means that the pups will have consistently predictable characteristics. Cockapoos, however, may inherit the characteristics of either or both their parent breeds. While some Cockapoos appear more similar to Cocker Spaniels, others will exhibit more Poodle traits, creating a variation in Cockapoo appearance and temperament.
