Tips on Grooming Your Lucas Terrier

Moderate Maintenance: Regular grooming is required to keep its fur in good shape.

Why Brush or Groom Your Lucas Terrier Dog?

Grooming and combing your dog's hair coat is an important part of standard pet care. Combing helps to keep your Lucas Terrier dog's coat in good condition by taking out loose hair and preventing hair mats/knots.

Brushing also serves to help to distribute healthy natural skin oils over the hair shaft, ensuring a gleaming coat and helping dirt to slide off the hair. This can also help to lessen the need to bath and therefore reduce the occurrence of bathing.

Brushing and grooming of your Lucas Terrier dog are activities that help to reinforce the positive relationship bond between your pet and you. Brushing should be a pleasant and comfy experience for your pet and you.

How Often to Groom Your Lucas Terrier

How often to brush and groom your dog will rely on each individual dog. Dogs tend to differ in their need for brushing because of their coat type and length and also depending on their recent activities.

Dogs with short coats typically require much less brushing and grooming compared to dogs with medium to long haired coats as these longer coats can get tangles, mats and debris trapped in them more easily.

Some very short-haired canines may not need standard 'brushing' and for these dogs, owners may instead like to try a soft grooming glove to delicately remove loose hair, occasionally.

Dogs should be brushed 'as required'. Owners should monitor the condition of their dog's coat, looking for any tangles/mats or dullness which suggests they might need a brush. Grooming can take anything from a few minutes to several hours a week depending on your type of dog.

Lucas Terrier Information

It is a sturdy, symmetrically built, working terrier like an old-fashioned Ilmer Sealyham type, created only by crossing an existing Lucas Terrier with a Norfolk Terrier or with a small Sealyham Terrier. A latter-day Norfolk Terrier mated with a latter-day Sealyham Terrier does not produce a Lucas Terrier because it will not trace back to the original Lucas Terrier lines. All true Lucas Terriers have a direct connection to Sir Jocelyn Lucas's original Ilmer Kennel based Lucas Terriers. The Lucas Terrier is bred primarily for temperament and companionship, and so should be friendly, with no aggressive tendencies towards people or other dogs, and not fearful or nervous while retaining the usual terrier traits. The coat should be fairly harsh, weather resistant and of medium length. It may be coloured or white, but the majority are tan, black and tan or saddle and tan. Dogs should weigh 14–20 lbs (6–9 kg) and bitches 11–17 lbs (5–8 kg).

The Lucas Terrier is a small, sweet, non-exaggerated British terrier that is making a comeback in popularity in the U.S. Smart and easy to train. Friendly toward people and other dogs. Excellent with children. Eagar to please. Not a yapper by nature. Likes to dig. Make sure you are this dog's firm, confident, consistent pack leader to avoid Small Dog Syndrome, human induced behavior problems. Always remember, dogs are canines, not humans. Be sure to meet their natural instincts as animals.
